More about that hippo brooch
So I know I've mentioned before that the hippo can symbolize emotional journeys. I woke up with some new insight (or crazy, if you're not inclined to ruminate over these things) regarding the patterns of its use and significance in Kurt's story.
I have not had my coffee yet, so bear with me!
So the hippo represents emotional journey; that it's a mounted trophy head makes the brooch a memento mori as well, so there are death/transformation themes attached to it as well.
My tally for when Kurt has worn the hippo head brooch is four times. I think its significance may be what comes following his wearing of it, not what necessarily happens during his wearing of it, though these things may be connected.
Kurt wears it in 2x17 "Night of Neglect" when he brings Blaine with him to WMHS for the first time. The next episode, "Born This Way", Kurt transfers back to McKinley and verbalizes his emotional commitment to Blaine: "I'm never saying goodbye to you."
The next time we see the brooch, Kurt is wearing it in 3x04 "Pot O' Gold" while trying to sell ad space in the flyers he designed for West Side Story. Undertakers end up buying this ad space. Death = transformation. Anyway, in the next episode, "The First Time", Kurt & Blaine have conflict which, once resolved, leads them to deepen their physical intimacy and renew their commitment to each other.
Then Kurt wears it in 3x17 "Dance With Somebody", it gets Kurt, who's feeling alienated from Blaine in their relationship, into some trouble with Chandler Kiehl. Chandler is ultimately a catalyst to address the real problem between them (lack of communication, Blaine's insecurity, Kurt's obliviousness), not the problem itself. After they talk to Emma, we have a strengthening of their relationship with honest communication and a renewal of their commitment: "You're the love of my life," Blaine tells Kurt. This renewal leads to greater confidence for Kurt, perhaps, when he nails his audition in "Choke". It's a moment of personal victory anyway.
Now we have Kurt wearing it when he interviews with Isabelle. It's a helpful token here and is leading Kurt into success, but at some cost: his world is diverging from Blaine, Blaine is feeling neglected. In 4x04 "The Breakup" I am going to tentatively predict a break down between them that is resolved and leads to a strengthening & transformation of their relationship and a renewal of their commitment to one another.

My brain did this while I was sleeping. It just kinda hit me this morning when I woke up. This was after having dreams about giant bedbugs (But I don't wear couture!).
