More 4x03 blather
Could Kurt and Isabelle be any more adorable and poignant?
This is so wonderful. I feel like we're seeing a new side of Kurt, a kind of vulnerability and even humility he hasn't shown us before. Some of this could be from his experience working at The Lima Bean, but there's more to it. He admits to Isabelle that he makes most of his own clothes. He's never done so in the show before; he prefers name dropping labels. I'm not even sure Blaine knows this about Kurt. And even his discount at Rue La La isn't going to afford him a wardrobe full of McQueen shirts. So, for Kurt, for whom his clothing and their labels have been [defensive] armour, to walk into Isabelle's office and lay himself bare like that (while he is dressed for [offensive] battle in his shark tooth pants)? It's brave (and Kurt has always been so brave), but it's also beautiful. I wonder if he would have been so forthcoming if she hadn't told him she was from Columbus and had got food poisoning at Breadstix?
Well placed hippo broach too, this is very much an emotional journey for Kurt, and he is showing the right amount of wisdom and intuition here, I think. He doesn't blunder along blindly the way Rachel has been with Cassie. He pays attention.
I should be writing, but, I'm listening to Blaine singing "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and I'm hoping it's the closing number so we maybe get a montage including Kurt finding success at vogue.com. It would be awesome.

Does the hippo head brooch have a particular meaning other than "Kurt is super stylish right now"?

And yes, hippos are symbolically loaded, if you're into looking at that aspect. I kind of come from a Jungian perspective (not in any formal analytical sense, I just think it's fun). Water symbols generally are associated with emotional stuff. So the shark teeth are a water symbol, but one of emotional resilience, focus, and renewal. The hippo, also of water, is one of emotional depth and journeying, creativity, healing, intuition, and wisdom, iirc. So I am optimistic for Kurt! At least for a little while. :S
