Brett was in English with Kurt.

Right! When Holly sang "Conjunction Junction". I remember now.

I assume you're talking about sound effects?

Yes. I don't recall Glee using that sound effect before. I think you're right about it indicating what's perhaps most important. Jake could be performance, or just recognition & respect more generally. He tells us how hard he worked on his song. Marley seems to want to fix Jake by connecting with him on a more sincere level, so yeah, relationship, I guess. She's looking for intimacy more than status I think?

It's not Kurt and Blaine's theme...

I know the piece you mean, and it's really lovely, and has haunted me from the Pilot because it sounds so familiar to me, but it's not the same as the piece Kurt and Blaine get in their scenes.

I'm pretty sure what I'm calling Kurt and Blaine's theme first plays in NBK when they run down the hall together. We hear it when Blaine transfers, and also when Kurt opens his NYADA letter with his Dad (I assumed the music is a stand-in for Blaine since Blaine is home with his eye injury). I'm not sure about other Kurt & Blaine instances. I think there must be at least one other time. But I'm pretty sure these are two different themes. I really miss the one from season 1. It was lovely. (I wish we had names for these pieces; it'd be easier to talk about them!)
