I know you said you don't read much meta, and I cannot for the life of remember where I read the post, but I did encounter an interesting piece with the thesis that the warped geography does fit into Glee's hyper-realism and stylized imitation of Ohio, wherein Lima is not much like real Lima at all, it's a caricature of all the awful small towns that trap their kids.
So I am hopeful that you are correct and that there aren't any geography pedants reading my story and throwing their hands up in despair. They probably gave up on Glee ages ago. :D
